Historical Biography
Recognizing that Joseon faced existential peril amid imperialist encirclement by Western powers, Qing China, and Meiji Japan, Kim Ok-gyun advocated rapid institutional modernization, equal rights, financial transparency, and true national sovereignty. In December 1884, Kim and fellow reformists orchestrated the **Gapsin Coup (갑신정변)**, seizing the palace and proclaiming a radical 14-point modernization manifesto.
Although Chinese Qing military intervention crushed the coup after three days, Kim Ok-gyun's pioneering vision for constitutional government and social equality laid the intellectual foundation for modern Korea's eventual transformation.
